Adams Family

RN: Since we missed out on visiting Mt Rainier, we thought about Mt St Helens, but realized we knew nothing about Mt Adams. Mt Adams is known by native people as Patho or Klickitat and is located only 37 miles east of Mt St Helens and 55 miles north of Mt Hood. We decided to hike a nice trail at the Conboy Lake Natural Wildlife Preserve in the Mt Adams Wilderness.

This is the view we got of Mt Adams from a viewing platform at the wildlife preserve. In contrast to Mt St Helens, which got a flat top because it blew its crown off, Mt Adams has a broad peak because of cone building events from separate vents (as usual, my info is from Wiki).

Conboy Lake only exists in the spring after snow runoff fills the basin. When we were there, most of the water had drained and it had become a prairie. As we were hiking through the prairie, two harrier hawks swooped at us, probably protecting a nest in the nearby trees. I got a lucky photo as one swooped over my head…

I also got to see my first sandhill cranes…

And, while this frog looks huge, compare it to the grain of the wood it is on… it was only about half an inch long…
