Much Fun but No Frogs

FE: We get to spend the whole day with Diane, Tristan and their two daughters Serena and Alana. What fun. First, I accompany Tristan and Serena on a hunt for Leopard frogs. Why does Tristan need the frogs you may ask. Are they to end up as the classic French frog-leg dish “cuisse de grenouille”? Well, not really, although it is the legs that are needed. See, Tristan teaches and runs the Physiology class at the University of North Dakota here in Grand Forks. Frog legs also are a classic experimental preparation to study how stimulating motor nerves leads to muscle contraction. The students are lucky to have a such a dedicated professor.

If you closely look at Tristan’s face below, you can guess that we did not catch any amphibians today, although one was spotted…first by the eagle-eyed Serena.

After lunch Diane and Tristan showed us around the University, their labs, the generously spaced buildings and well-laid out campus, below is the Prairie Garden with an eagle flying over it.

RN: Below is the Chester Fritz undergrad library.

We also took a walk along the Red River, which is very scenic and wonderful to have in the middle of Grand Forks (it forks before it enters town, hence the name).

There was a 100 yr flood in 1997 that went over the top of road on this bridge; then there was another 100 yr flood in 2006 and 2009 – hmmm…100 yr?
