Follow the Water

RN: Hey peoples! Sorry we missed a day of posting on our blog. We took hundreds of photos two days ago as we wandered around Niagara Falls so it took awhile to sort through and process everything. Also, we are good and ready to be done with our epic trip.

Niagara Falls is a collection of three humongous water falls created by the Niagara River as it drains from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The river is split by Goat Island, forming American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls on the American side, while Horseshoe Falls spans the border. We’ve been told that the falls are much more spectacular when viewed from the Canadian side because you get a face-on view of all the falls, but we were quite happy with what we saw as you can see here…

Below is a shot of the crazy rapids in the Niagara River just before they plunge over the cliff…

This is American Falls…

This is Bridal Veil Falls…

And this is Horseshoe Falls, complete with rainbow!

I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the geometry of Horseshoe Falls, so I looked up the Google satellite view when we stopped for lunch. Now you can see why it’s called Horseshoe Falls…

Another view of Horseshoe Falls…

Roaring Spectacular

To the quiet and subtle

Meanwhile, upstream, geese are happily feeding and resting, not knowing what chaos happens further down…

Upstream are also many beautiful small falls…

FE: And on we drive, east, close to Lake Ontario. The Tesla chargers are located in the parking lot of a giant casino…with the restrooms all the way in the back. We did not get rich

Towards evening we make our way to Oswego, a small college town on the lake. Here the Oswego river empties into the lake.

The river connects to the Erie Canal system. The calm water is the canal with a lock at the end, side by side with the rushing river.

Well, the next morning we say goodbye to Oswego

After a great long wiggly drive across the Adirondacks we see the promised land of Vermont through the Crown Point Bridge

Only a few more miles to our friends’ lake house!

  1. Wow. Your blog has been one long list of bridges over water and amazing cloud formations. You can probably smell home by now, being in your old home of Vermont.

I’ll be glad to see you, pretty soon.

    Xoxo
