Hanging out

RN.
We were excited to see Tom Finn and his wife Ahn-Chi Le at lunch today in North Bethesda!  Tom was my first graduate student and he works as a Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls Reviewer for the Federal Drug Administration.  There are so many terrific memories I have of Tom: creative and precise research; late nights working hard and accumulating lots of data; master baker and therefore star of our lab parties; amazing artist (see image); and friendly, steady guiding hand in training newbies to the lab.  I was also on Ahn-Chi’s dissertation advisory committee (she is now an administrator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute) and was at their wedding in 2000. I consider the grad students who trained in my lab as my “babies” and I’m so proud my first “baby” is doing so well!!

Here is Rae with Tom and Ahn-Chi

FE. Tom is world famous for the great hand-drawn science illustrations he produced in Rae’s lab. Here is one she found today:

One fun memory I have of Tom is that he is a very good cook and was in originally in charge of providing appetizers for our lab parties. Unfortunately, he is also a slow cook and always showed up late. Solution: he was place in charge of desserts.

Otherwise, the day was spent sampling food and drink

and more drinks…here is Debbie at Dish and Dram mixing her acclaimed “Debbinaire”
