An Artful Conclusion in KC/Lawrence

RN: Today (Monday June 11), we followed up on 11 yr old Alexandra’s recommendation and visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City MO.  Upon arrival, we happily discovered EV chargers on the ChargePoint network and we plugged our Tesla in.

The museum was created by two separate bequests to Kansas City (KC), one by William Rockhill Nelson, and another by Mary McAfee Atkins.  Initially, there were plans to build two separate museums, but the trustees of the two estates agreed to “combine the two bequests along with smaller bequests from others to make a single major art institution” (Wikipedia).  What a wise move!  The museum opened in 1933 and has been growing ever since. The museum is one of the largest in the US and its holdings contain art from around the world.  The art is located by region and each collection is beautifully displayed in thoughtfully decorated rooms. This is by far the nicest art museum I have ever visited! As a bonus, admission is free, as is virtually all other museums in KC, thanks to generous donors who wanted all collections to be available to the entire public.

In addition to the museum, there are 22 acres of park outside the building with sculptures, a glass labyrinth, a stainless steel tree, and an artful mini-golf course (putting inside art!).

FE: Amazing Art….presented just right, perfect mix of education and fun, what a vast collection….thinkers from all kinds of culture (sorry, they are all male…need to add some diversity). The outside areas are peppered with giant shuttlecocks…who came up with that?

Felix trying to wrestle the basketball away from Michael Naismith, the Father of Basketball. This is on the Kansas University campus, which is huge and sprawls all over Lawrence! Thanks, Ed, for the driving tour of the whole campus!
